Blazers Finish Regular Season with First Back to Back Wins in Same Season Since 2014

Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Belhaven football team finished off their 2021 regular season schedule with a 21-7 win at Southwestern University. The win makes it back-to-back victories for the Blazers marking the first time since 2014 that Belhaven has had back-to-back wins in the same season.

The Blazers jumped on the Pirates early in the contest taking their opening drive 68 yards on 5 plays for the opening score. The Blazers' touchdown came on a 48-yard pass from Mayowa Asagunla to Michael Simpson and marked Simpson's first score of the season.

After the opening score, the Belhaven defense went to work forcing a turnover on downs on the Pirates' first drive of the game. With 7:27 to go in the first quarter, the Blazers got their first forced turnover of the game when Corey Toliver picked off a jump ball pass at the Southwestern 30-yard line.

Following the turnover, the Blazers offense capitalized driving the ball inside the Pirates' five-yard line before Kolbe Blunt punched it in for the touchdown from three yards out.

The Blazers took their 14-0 lead into the second quarter and extended their advantage on a blocked field goal attempt that TJ Hersey returned 78-yards for a Belhaven touchdown. With 8:15 to go in the first half, Southwestern got on the board for the first time, connecting on a 48-yard touchdown pass to cut the Blazers lead to 21-7. Belhaven took a 14-point lead into the break.

In the second half, the Blazers defense stifled the Pirates' offense forcing a pair of turnovers on downs on the hosts' first two drives of the half. Belhaven's defense capped off a strong day with a second interception when Phillip Naylor picked off a deep pass attempt to ice the win for the Blazers.

In the game, Belhaven allowed a season low seven points and shutout Southwestern in the second half. Connor Fordham finished the game with a team high six tackles and Carlton Brown picked up a pair of sacks for the Blazers.

Mayowa Asagunla finished 11-12 on pass attempts with 146 yards through the air and a passing touchdown. Brad Foley finished the game with 93 yards rushing on 22 carries while Kolbe Blunt picked up 20 yards on nine carries and finished with a score.

With the win, Belhaven finishes the regular season 2-2 and finishes as the #3 seed in the ASC East Division. The Blazers will go on the road and square off against West Division #3 seed Howard Payne next Saturday in ASC postseason play. Kickoff in Brownwood is set for 1 PM.
