JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University women's basketball team came up short against the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets by a final score of 82-67 in American Southwest Conference play on Friday evening inside Rugg Arena.
The Yellowjackets opened the game going on a 10-5 run, but the Blazers stormed and took the 13-11 lead at the 2:28 mark of the first quarter. LETU regained the lead and took the 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Yellowjackets continued to shoot well from the field in the second quarter, as they extended their lead to 14 points to make the score 44-30 going into halftime.
LeTourneau went on a 13-2 run coming out of the halftime break to bring the score 57-32 at the 6:40 mark of the third quarter. In the second half of the third quarter, the Blazers started to chip away at the lead to narrow the score to 15 points at the end the third frame. Both teams went back and forth exchanging baskets in the fourth quarter, but unfortunately at the end of the contest the Blazers fell by a final of 82-67.
As a team, the Blazers shot 86.7 percent from the charity stripe and 31.6 percent from behind the arc. The Green and Gold had 30 points from the bench and posted 10 steals in the contest. Kei Honey led the Blazers with 16 points and shot 50 percent from the field, while Janae Collier had a double-double in the contest. Destiny Johnson added 10 points and grabbed eight boards.
The Blazers will have to wait until tomorrow to see what lies in front of them about making the American Southwest Conference Tournament as a 4th seed.
