Baseball Takes Both Ends of Doubleheader Against McMurry

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball continued their hot start to the season knocking off McMurry University in both ends of a Friday night doubleheader. The Blazers secured the series win with a game to go after beating the War Hawks 12-1 in the first game and 9-2 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the day against McMurry, Belhaven struck big in the first inning. The Blazers put together a five run opening frame jump started by a leadoff triple from Hunter White. Nick Lucido drove White in and then came around to score himself later in the inning.

McMurry pushed across their only run of the game in the top half of the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk but the Blazers answered back with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth to extend their lead.

Belhaven finished off their 12-run display with five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning finished off with an RBI double from Reed Bolton. Logan Goodreau came in to pitch a perfect ninth inning and secured the win in the 7-inning contest for the Blazers.

In game one, Hunter White went 3-4 for Belhaven with a triple and three runs scored. Nick Lucido finished the game going 4-4 with a team-high five RBI and a pair of runs scored. The winning pitcher was Beau Louviere who went four innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out three.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the day, the Blazers turned to reigning NCBWA Division III Pitcher of the Month, Brett Sanchez, on the mound. The Blazers righty kept McMurry in check early, setting down the visitors in order through the first three innings.

The offense for Belhaven got started in the first inning again striking for a pair of runs coming off a two-RBI single by Nathan Herron. The home side tacked on two more in the third after a double steal attempt led to a throwing error by the McMurry catcher.

After a single run in the fourth for Belhaven, the War Hawks would scratch across their first run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Blazers got the run back in the home half of the sixth and added on three more in the eighth to cap off another win for the Blazers.

Brett Sanchez picked up his fourth win in as many starts this season and went eight innings allowing just two runs on four hits and tallying eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Kyle McLaughlin went 3-4 with an RBI and Nathan Herron finished 2-4 with a pair of RBI. Caleb Whittle reached base three times going 2-3 with a walk and three runs scored.

With the losses, McMurry fell to 0-7 on the year and 0-5 in ASC competition. The Blazers improve to 8-3 on the year with a 4-1 conference record. Belhaven will go for the series sweep on Saturday with first pitch set for 1 PM.
