JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fell at home to the #2 East Texas Baptist Tigers in a close matchup that saw the Blazers come up short in their bid to upset the undefeated from Marshall, Texas.
Belhaven got out to an early lead against the visitors with strong shooting from beyond the three point line. After a 3-4 start in the first quarter, the Blazers shot 6-14 in the first half, notching a mark over 40% in the opening half.
At the break, the Blazers were led by
Shanda Pugh who had 10 points to lead all scorers. Belhaven maintained a 42-34 lead, the first time ETBU has trailed at half time all season.
The unbeaten Tigers hit back strong in the second half with a 27-13 third quarter putting ETBU on top with 10 minutes to go. Belhaven worked to fight their way back into the contest but strong free throw shooting from ETBU helped keep the distance late on and propelled the Tigers to a 79-65 win.
The visitors were led by Hanna Hudson who finished with a team-high 14 points and finished the game 4-9 from three. Taylor Singleton ended the game with nine points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers.
Shanda Pugh led all scorers with 15 points on 3-10 shooting from three point range and also tallied five rebounds.
Janae Collier was the only other Blazers in double digit scoring putting up 10 points before fouling out late in the contest. All Blazers' who saw game time registered a field goal.
The Blazers finish off their regular season schedule on Friday, March 5th as they host LeTourneau University at 5 PM.
