Former Belhaven Assistant and Head Coach Named Head Coach at McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Former Belhaven Men's Basketball Assistant and Head Coach, John Aiken, was promoted to head coach of men's basketball at McNeese State, on Thursday, March 11. Aiken was named as Associate Head Coach on March 20, 2018, by Heath Schroyer who is moving from the head coach position to the Director of Athletics at McNeese State.

Aiken was the head coach of Men's Basketball at Belhaven for two seasons from 2012-2014 and had an overall record of 30-33 and a .476 winning percentage, which is third all-time in the history of the program. During Aiken's tenure as head coach, the Blazers competed in the 2013 NAIA National Tournament. Aiken also had six SSAC All-Conference honorees during his head coaching tenure. In the 2013-14 season, Aiken led the Blazers to an 18-15 overall record, 14-6 in SSAC play.

Prior to becoming head coach, Aiken spent four seasons as an assistant with the men's basketball program which featured two additional trips to the NAIA National Tournament in 2010 and 2012. In the 2009-10 season, the Blazers were 24-10 overall and earned a spot in the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since 1972. Throughout his career at Belhaven, Aiken coached a total of four honorable mention All-Americans, six all-division honorees, and nine all-conference honorees. The Portland, Maine native also earned his Master's Degree in Sports Administration from Belhaven in 2013.

After his tenure at Belhaven, Aiken spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Univeristy of Tennessee at Martin, then spent two seasons as the top assistant at Nicholls State University before being hired at McNeese State.
