Jackson, Miss. - Belhaven delivered one of the most efficient offensive performances in program history Tuesday night inside Rugg Arena, defeating Covenant 113-77 in the CCS Tournament Quarterfinals. With the win, the Blazers improve to 14-12 overall and advance to face No. 2 seed Huntingdon in the semifinals on Friday at 4:00 PM.
The tournament is hosted by No. 1 seed Maryville, who will face LaGrange on the opposite side of the bracket. Â
Belhaven's 47 made field goals are tied for the fifth-most in program history. The Blazers also dished out 36 assists, tied for the most in a single game in program history, matching a record that has stood alone since 2003.
The Blazers wasted no time setting the tone.
CJ Minton opened the scoring with a steal and fast-break layup, completing a three-point play to give Belhaven an early 3-0 lead.
After Logan Patterson tied the game with a three, Belhaven answered immediately.
Benjamin Stewart knocked down a three from the wing, Minton buried a transition three, and
Dyllion Redmond finished inside to spark an 11-3 surge behind an 8-0 run.
Covenant briefly cut the margin to one at 19-18 behind a three from Noah Pence and free throws from Korbin Long. That would be as close as the Scots would get.
Belhaven responded with a decisive 18-3 run midway through the half. Minton connected from deep twice during the stretch,
Neal Terry scored inside, and Stewart added a tip-in to extend the lead to double digits. When Minton drilled back-to-back fast-break threes, the Blazers' advantage ballooned to 40-21.
Late in the half, Covenant found brief momentum behind baskets from Ethan Parker and Pence, trimming the margin to 15. But Belhaven closed strong. Redmond converted a fast-break layup,
Kam Beverly scored in the paint, and Stewart added a layup before
Dan Robinson buried a three in the final minute to send the Blazers into the locker room ahead 51-27.
Belhaven shot 54 percent in the opening half and assisted on 14-of-20 made field goals.
The Blazers picked up right where they left off. Minton and
DJ Jones each scored inside to push the lead past 25 in the opening two minutes.
Parker hit a three and later converted in transition to try to ignite Covenant, but the Blazers answered every push. Stewart knocked down a three, Wallace scored inside twice, and Terry finished in the paint to keep the margin near 30.
The defining stretch came midway through the second half. After a three from Luuk Dusek cut the lead to 23, Belhaven responded with a 12-2 run. Redmond finished inside, Robinson added a layup, and Beverly capped the sequence with a dunk in the paint to extend the lead to 83-53.
Covenant continued to battle behind baskets from Pence and Patterson, but Belhaven's depth overwhelmed the visitors.
Christian McGahan scored on a fast-break dunk and followed with a putback, Stewart added another layup, and Beverly threw down a dunk to push the lead beyond 30.
In the closing minutes, the Blazers continued to share the ball and attack in transition. McGahan scored on back-to-back possessions inside,
Kade West knocked down a fast-break three, and
Avery Richards added a transition three to push the total past 110.
Brandon Payne capped the night with a late fast-break dunk.
The Blazers finished the game shooting 54.7 percent from the field, scoring 54 points in the paint and 31 fast-break points while recording 36 assists on 47 made baskets.
