ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven Baseball team finished off a series win over the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys on Saturday as the Blazers open up their 2021 American Southwest Conference schedule.
After splitting Friday's doubleheader with the hosts, Belhaven was able to edge out a slugfest over the Cowboys that took a ninth inning rally to bring the victory home.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead on Hardin-Simmons striking for three runs in the first inning. After the Cowboys answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second, the two teams would trade runs. An HSU grand slam in the home half of the fifth saw the Blazers' lead cut to one.
Belhaven scored in five of the final six innings and a three-run frame from Hardin-Simmons in the eighth tied the game at 10-10 heading into the ninth.
In the top of the ninth,
Caleb Whittle put the Blazers on top with an RBI single to score
Nathan Herron.
Kyle McLaughlin drove into two more on his RBI single and then came around to score on a
Julyan Urena base hit.
Trip Benson capped off the five run inning for Belhaven with an RBI double that gave the Blazers the 15-10 lead.
The Blazers return to the diamond on March 5th when they kick off a series against McMurry University. First pitch of Game One is set for 4 PM.
