Blazers Drop Pair of Matches in Home Opener

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Volleyball team hosted the University of Texas at Dallas Comets in a doubleheader on Friday, February 26 for their home opener of the 2020-21 season. The Comets swept the pair of matches over the Blazers taking both matches by a final of 3-0.

GAME ONE

The Blazers lost each set by a final of 25-15 as the Comets jumped ahead of the Blazers early in the first two sets and despite a strong effort from the Blazers the Comets never relinquished the lead. The third set started with the Blazers taking the first five points, while the Comets then matched with five straight points of their own. The teams then exchanged points and leads eventually knotting up the set at ten points apiece. The Comets gained the lead after breaking the tie and the Blazers could not regain it as the Comets closed out the match on a 15-5 scoring run to seal the win.

Chelsea Creighton and Vivian Marquez led the Blazers with three kils each while Caitlin Torok and Emily Carroll added two kills each with Izabella Erickson, Katie Beasley, Grace Laukhuf, and Raegan Young each had one kill. Torok also led the team in total blocks with three while Carroll had two total blocks, and Marquez had one block during the match. Sydney McEachern led the team with eight digs in the match.

GAME TWO

The second match saw the Blazers fall to the Comets, 25-20, 25-19, and 25-17. The Blazers had leads in all three sets, but could not maintain those as the Comets were able to overcome the Blazers in each set earning the 3-0 victory.

Emily Carroll led the Blazers in kills and total blocks in the match with six and four respectively. Vivian Marquez added five kills, while Izabella Erickson had four kills, and Chelsea Creighton accounted for two kills. Grace Eidson, Caitlin Torok, and Raegan Young had one kill each. Sydney McEachern led the team with 11 digs and Vivian Marquez tacked on seven throughout the match.

The Blazers fall to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in American Southwest Conference play. The Blazers will return on the road as they face off against the LeTourneau University YellowJackets in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 2. The first match is set to start at 5 p.m.
