ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven Baseball kicked off their American Southwest Conference schedule on Friday in Abilene taking on Hardin-Simmons University. The Blazers and Cowboys split the double-header with HSU taking the first game and Belhaven piling on the runs in a second game victory.
GAME ONE
The hosts got out to an early lead in the first game striking for five runs in the bottom of the second inning. A trio of those runs came on a home run from Kolsen Powers, his lone hit in the game. The Blazers responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by
Hunter White.
Belhaven continued to battle and added a run in the fifth inning, once again delivered by a hit from
Hunter White. In the top of the seventh, the Blazers pushed across two runs to tie the game at 5-5 but the comeback bid would fall short with the Cowboys getting a walk off single, ending the game in seven innings.
In Game One, RHP
Beau Louviere got the start and went 6.1 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits and striking out three.
Hunter White led Belhaven at the plate going 2-4 with 3 RBI and a home run.
GAME TWO
After the loss in the first game of the day, the Blazers would explode offensively in the nightcap. Belhaven took the lead in second inning after
Hunter White delivered an RBI double. A six-run top of the third game the Blazers an 8-1 lead.
The Blazers continued to add to their advantage scoring three runs each in the next three innings bringing their tally in the game to 17 in total. The offensive display was highlighted by left fielder
Evan Moore who went 4-6 in the game with five RBI and four runs scored. Moore's day at the plate included a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. Four hits is a new single game career-high for Moore and five RBI ties his career-high.
In total, 11 different Blazers' reached base in the second game and
Nathan Herron finished the game with five walks, a career high.
On the mound,
Brett Sanchez delivered another stellar start going 7.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits. Sanchez struck out nine, tying his single-game career mark, a total he has hit twice previously. Sanchez is now 3-0 on the year with an ERA of 0.00 and 26 strikeouts in 24 innings of work. Belhaven is now 5-3 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
The Blazers will go for the series win on Saturday in Abilene with first pitch against HSU set for 12 PM.
