JACKSON, Miss. - In the final game of a two-day weekend tournament hosted by Belhaven at Smith-Wills Stadium, the Blazers baseball team came just short of a three-win weekend falling in the finale to the Huntingdon Hawks by an 8-7 final score.
The Blazers fell behind to the Hawks 1-0 in the third inning after Huntingdon was able to manufacture a run culminating in a sacrifice fly. Belhaven would find their offensive rhythm in the fifth inning and put together a six-run frame.
In the fifth,
Kyle McLaughlin tied the game on a single that tallied his team-high, 7th RBI of the year. That also kicked off a rally of six straight hits for Belhaven, all of which drove in a run on the way to Belhaven taking a 6-1 advantage.
The game would hold that score line until the top of the seventh when Huntingdon was able to claw two runs back. In the top of the ninth, the Hawks produced a five-run inning on the back of patient at-bats. The visitors took an 8-6 lead and, in the bottom of the ninth, the Blazers saw the tying run thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game.
With the loss the Blazers fall to 4-2 on the early season with eyes on conference play set to start this weekend.
Nick Lucido led Belhaven at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Julyan Urena and
Trip Benson also recorded multi-hit games.
Belhaven will be back in action this weekend as they head to Abilene, Texas to face Hardin-Simmons in the ASC opening series.
