JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers picked up their second win of the weekend on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout win over the Centenary College Gents. The win came after Belhaven knocked off Edgewood College by a score of 22-5 in the first game of a four-team round robin tournament at Smith-Wills Stadium.
The Blazers got another stellar start from right-hander
Brett Sanchez. After allowing a pair of baserunners in the first, Sanchez was able to escape a jam. After a leadoff single in the second, Sanchez proceed to set down 15 in a row. The Slidell, La. native would secure a complete game shutout on the night and pick up his second win on the young season. Sanchez allowed just three hits and struck out eight, just a week and a day after an eight inning performance that secured him ASC Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Blazers offense was held in check early until the fifth inning when
Kyle McLaughlin produced an RBI single that opened up the scoring. Belhaven tacked on a second run in the inning on a fly out from
Hunter White.
In the sixth, the Blazers added to their lead when
Reed Bolton delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring
Nick Lucido from third base. An RBI double in the seventh inning from
Hunter White and an eighth inning RBI single from
Nathan Herron would add two more runs to the Blazers advantage before Sanchez closed the game out. Three Blazers finished with multiple hits in the win and
Nick Lucido finished with a pair of runs scored.
The Blazers will look to sweep their weekend on Sunday when they take on Huntingdon College. First pitch against the Hawks is set for 7 PM at Smith-Wills Stadium.
