JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team defeated the Edgewood College Eagles by a final score of 22-5 on Saturday in the early game of the Belhaven Baseball Tournament at Smith Wills Stadium.
The Green and Gold scored 22 runs for the first time since 2012 when the Blazers blanked Rust College 22-0 on February 29, 2012.
There might have been ice on the ground, but the Blazers came out hot scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Belhaven added two more runs in the bottom half of the second to bring the score to 7-0 going into the third frame. The Eagles held the Blazers to a scoreless third inning to keep the score at 7-0, but Belhaven came back in the fourth inning and posted two additional runs to extend their lead to 9-0.
The Blazers' bats remained hot in bottom of the fifth inning, as they scored eight runs in the inning to give Belhaven the 17-0 advantage. The Blazers continued to score and added five runs in the in the bottom of the sixth to give the Blazers the 22-0 lead. The Eagles finally got on the board in the seventh inning as they scored two runs to make the score 22-2. Edgewood scored three more runs in the contest, but the Blazers won easily by a final score of 22-5 to move to 3-1 overall.
Nick Lucido led the Blazers offensively going 4-for-4 from the plate with one homerun and five RBI. Nathan Herron also posted four hits in the contest and added two RBI. Beau Louviere (1-0) got the start on the mound for the Blazers and went 5 scoreless innings and gave up only one hit. As a team, the Blazers scored 22 runs on 20 hits and stole six bases in the game.
Belhaven returns to the diamond tomorrow against the Huntingdon College Hawks at Smith Wills Stadium for the final game of the Belhaven Baseball Tournament. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
