JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University women's basketball team picked up a home win over Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Blazers move to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Blazers jumped out to 18-9 lead at the midway point of the first quarter. Howard Payne went on a 7-2 run to close out the latter part of the first quarter as the Blazers took the 20-16 advantage to end the first frame.
The Blazers and Lady Jackets exchanged buckets over the opening possessions of the second quarter, but the Green and Gold caught an offensive spark to push their lead to 32-25 with 5:50 remaining until the halftime break. Howard Payne tied the ballgame at 38 under the one minute mark. The Blazers scored a bucket just before the buzzer to bring the score to 40-38 at the break.
The Lady Jackets took the lead early on and continued to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the third quarter. Howard Payne outshot the Blazers 19-11 to push the lead to 57-51. The fourth quarter was a different story for the Green and Gold. The Blazers tied the game up midway through the final quarter of regulation and took the lead with 3:33 remaining in the ballgame. Belhaven held on to secure the 77-72 victory over Howard Payne.

Nyah Davis led the Blazers offensively with 17 points, two assists, two steals, and one block in the contest.
Jakiya Jackson finished with 16 points, shot 66.6 percent from behind the arc, and was 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Shomaria Overton scored a double-double in the game scoring 12 points and had 11 assists.
Xhiir Burgess rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Blazers with 11 points.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, December 18 against the Sul Ross State University Lobos inside Rugg Arena. Tip-off is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
