JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team picked up a 64-55 conference win over Sul Ross State on Saturday as they wrap up 2021 and head to a mid-season break before resuming their campaign in 2022.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead against the Lobos taking advantage of their athleticism down low. Belhaven pulled out to a seven-point lead to close out the first quarter. Belhaven took their lead to double digits in the second quarter and took a 31-18 advantage into the half.
Partway through the third quarter the Blazers took an 18 point lead on a deep three pointer from
Kourtne Lee. Heading into the fourth quarter the Blazers maintained a 13 point advantage and despite a late rally from Sul Ross that cut the Bu lead to single digits it was the Blazers who held steady for the win.
Xhiir Burgess led the Blazers with 12 points in the game and picked up a double-double adding 10 rebounds which also led the Blazers.
Shomaria Overton finished with 11 points in the game and also grabbed a double-double with 10 points while recording seven total rebounds.
As a team, the Blazers shot 37.7% from the field while holding the Lobos to just 30% shooting from the field. Belhaven was dominant down low winning the paint battle 48-30 whille also leading from start to finish in the game.
With the win the Blazers improve to 8-3 on the season and 3-3 in ASC play.
They will resume their season on January 3rd, 2022 when they travel to ETBU to face the Tigers.
