RICHARDSON, Texas - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season on Thursday after they were beaten 75-61 by UT Dallas in their ASC Opener.
The Blazers, who had opened the season 3-0 with three out of conference victories, took an early lead in the contest with solid three-point shooting in the first quarter.
Belhaven led by as many as eight points with 1:14 to go in the first quarter but the hosts opened the second quarter on a strong run to cut the deficit and eventually take the lead with 7:12 to go in the first half. At the break, the Comets led 46-34.
In the second half, UT Dallas pulled away leading by as many as 19 points at the close of the third quarter. Belhaven worked to cut the deficit after trailing by 21 in the first minute of the final quarter. Belhaven cut the lead back down to 14 points but could not complete the comeback against the Comets.
Shomaria Overton led all scorers with 25 points while also posting seven rebounds and five assists. In 36 minutes Overton went 8-15 from the field and 8-10 from the free throw line.
Nyah Davis and
Jakiya Jackson each posted seven points in the game while
Xhiir Burgess finished with six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
With the loss, the Blazers fall to 3-1 and 0-1 in ASC play. They'll look to bounce back Saturday as they travel to Shreveport, La. to face Centenary. Tip is set for 2 PM.
