Womens Basketball Tops MUW 62-45 to Remain Undefeated

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Belhaven University women's basketball team defeated the Mississippi University for Women Owls 62-45 to remain undefeated to open the 2021-22 season. The Blazers win their third straight game on Tuesday evening on the campus of Mississippi University for Women.

Belhaven was able to jump out to a commanding 10-0 lead in the first six minutes of action. The Blazers continued to pressure the Owls and shoot well from the floor to close out the first quarter by a score of 17-7.

The Blazers remained hot in the second quarter as they extended their lead to 24 points with 5:57 remaining until halftime. The Owls chipped away at the lead in the latter part of the second frame, but Belhaven led MUW by a score of 34-19 going into the halftime break.

To open the second half, the Blazers struggled from the floor as the W cut the lead to 11 points. The Blazers remained steady as the score was 47-34 going into the final quarter of play. 

The Blazers kept the pressure on the Owls by going on a 11-5 run to open the fourth quarter of the game. Belhaven would hold on to defeat the Owls by a final score of 62-45 to remain undefeated to begin the season.

Shomaria Overton led the Blazers with 16 points, shot 60 percent from the field, shot 50 percent from behind the arc, and was 3-for-6 from the charity stripe. Junior Nyah Davis finished the night with 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Kourtne Lee had nine points in the contest, while Xhiir Burgess had a team-high 10 rebounds in the win over MUW. As a team, the Blazers shot 43.1 percent from the floor, went 5-for-12 from three point range and shot 50 percent from the free throw line. 

The Blazers will return to action on Thursday, November 18 against the UT Dallas Comets to open Conference play. Tip off is slated for 6:00 p.m. in Richardson, Texas.
