COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday after beating MUW on the road in a come from behind win.
The matchup was a tight game throughout after an initial breakout by the Blazers that saw them take an early 11-2 lead. The two teams traded baskets and the hosts took their first lead of the game at the 13 minute mark of the first half.
Belhaven regained a foothold in the latter stages of the first half with
Arother Ratliff leading the charge. Ratliff's 10 halftime points led all scorers and had BU up 44-41 at the break.
The Blazers' were not able to pull away in the second half though and the hosts quickly flipped the script late in the game. Despite a seven point BU lead near the five minute mark in the second half it was MUW who held a lead as the game entered the final two minutes.
Belhaven tied the game up through a pair of made free throws from
Rian Shields at the 1:20 mark and a pair of three pointers from
Matthew McMillan put some separation between the sides late.
Luke Couch's late free throw was enough to ice it for Belhaven who improves to 1-2 on the early season.
The Blazers were led on the night by
Donovan Givens who finished with 18 points including going 4-5 from beyond the arc.
Arother Ratliff posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds which topped Belhaven.
Luke Couch,
Matthew McMillan and
Jay Brantley all finished with double-figure scoring as well.
BU will now head back to Jackson for their home opener on Saturday against Rhodes College. Tip off is set for 3 PM inside Rugg Arena.
