JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University men's basketball team defeated the Rhodes College Lynx on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play. With the win, the Blazers improve to 2-2 overall.
In the opening minutes of the first half, the Blazers jumped out to a 19-11 advantage over the Lynx. Belhaven continued to dominate to extend their lead to 19 points with 8:50 remaining in the first half. Both teams exchanged buckets for the rest of the half, but the Green and Gold took the 58-44 into the halftime break.
The Blazers came out of the break going on a 8-2 run to extend their lead to 20 points, which was the largest lead of the game. Rhodes fought back to narrow the lead to single digits midway through the second half. The Lynx continued to put pressure on the Blazers as Rhodes came within five points with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Belhaven pushed the lead to 14 points with 3:23 left in the game. The Blazers held strong to seal the 98-86 victory over Rhodes College.
Four Blazers finished the game with double digit scoring figures. Luke Couch led Belhaven with 28 points, went 6-for-9 from the floor, shot 50 percent from behind the arc and had a 100 percent free throw percentage (14-14). Donovan Givens posted 17 points and shot 70 percent from the field this afternoon. Arother Ratliff led the team with five blocks, collected seven rebounds, and finished the game with 16 points. Matthew McMillan was the final Blazer to finish in double digits with 15 points.
As a team, the Green and Gold shot 56.3% from the floor and went 12-for-25 from behind the arc. Additionally, the Blazers shot 78.8 percent from the charity stripe.
The Blazers will return to action on Thursday, December 2 against the Hardin Simmons University Cowboys inside Rugg Arena. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
