ATLANTA, Ga. - The Belhaven University women's basketball team defeated Agnes Scott College, 81-45, on Saturday afternoon in the Agnes Scott Tip Off Classic. With the win, the Blazers move to 2-0 on the year.
The Blazers dominated the Scots early on in the first quarter and went on a 11-0 run to open the contest. Belhaven continued to shoot well from the floor to take the 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Blazers carried their momentum over to the second quarter and extended the lead to 28 points. Belhaven's defense only allowed the Scots to score 16 points in the first half to take the 42-16 advantage into the halftime break.
Nyah Davis led the Blazers in the first half with nine points and shot 50 percent from the field. As a team, the Blazers shot 40% from the floor and grabbed 28 rebounds.
In the third quarter, Belhaven extended their lead to 39 points to continue to dominate Agnes Scott. The Green and Gold went on to take the 63-27 lead going into the final frame. In the opening minutes of the final frame, BU led by as many as 42 points and dominated all sides of the ball. The Blazers held strong to seal the 81-45 victory over the Scots.
Three Blazers finished the game with double-digit scoring. Jakiya Jackson led the Blazers with 12 points, shot 5-for-9 from the field and shot 50 percent from Behind the arc and the charity stripe. Nadia Cohen tallied 11 points in the contest and shot 66.6 percent from the free throw line. Xhiir Burgess earned 10 points and finished the contest shooting 50 percent from the floor.
The Blazers will return to the court on Tuesday, November 16 against Mississippi University for Women Owls in Columbus, Miss. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
