ATLANTA, Ga. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team opened up their 2021-22 regular season with an 82-77 overtime victory over Sewanee on Friday. The game was Belhaven's first on the Agnes Scott Tip Off Classic hosted in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Blazers fell behind early in the game as the Tigers jumped out to an early run and pulling away for an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was Belhaven though who took charge in the second quarter and a
Nyah Davis three-pointer put BU ahead for the first time since the opening stages of the contest partway through the quarter.
At the break the two squads were locked 40-40 and the game remained a back and forth contest throughout the second half. Belhaven edged out a one-point lead to end the third quarter but could not pull away with the Tigers regaining the lead early in the fourth quarter. The Blazers battled back from a two possession deficit with five minutes to go in the game and led in the final seconds but a pair of made Sewanee free throws sent the game into OT.
Belhaven took the lead back quickly in the overtime period and a basket from
Jakiya Jackson put Belhaven up by three with less than a minute to go. The Blazers were able to pull away from there to secure the opening night win.
Shomaria Overton led the Blazers in scoring on the day with 19 points on 6-11 shooting from the field and 2-2 shooting from three. Overton added four rebounds and two assists on the night.
Nyah Davis added 17 points in the game including going 4-6 from beyond the arc while
Xhiir Burgess picked up a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Blazers will look to finish out the Agnes Scott Tip Off Classic on a strong note tomorrow as they take on the hosts, Agnes Scott. Tip off is set for 2 PM Central.
