Blazers Win Fourth Straight with 24-10 Victory Over Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Belhaven Football team picked up a fourth straight ASC win on Saturday as they beat Howard Payne 24-10 to end the Jackets unbeaten season. 

Belhaven opened the scoring against Howard Payne in the early going with a field goal from Constantine Hontzas after the defense forced a punt on the hosts' opening drive. Early in the second quarter, the Blazers added to their lead when Brad Foley broke away from the defense for a 57-yard touchdown run putting BU up 10-0. The Jackets looked to answer late in the half but their last second field goal attempt was blocked by the Blazers who took their 10-0 lead into the half.

Early in the second half the Blazers added to their lead when Kolbe Blunt finished off the first Belhaven drive with a 43-yard touchdown run. With Belhaven leading 17-0, Howard Payne would get their first points of the game utilizing good field position to pick up a 25-yard field goal. The Jackets cut it to a one score game early in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Landon McKinney to Selah Smith. 

The Blazers were able to get the score right back though as a 42-yard diving grab by Michael Simpson set Belhaven up inside the HPU 4-yard line. On fourth and goal, Belhaven fullback Bogan Brewer was able to punch the ball across the goal line putting the Blazers up 24-10, a score that would stand for them remainder of the game.

Once again the Belhaven offensive attack was dominant with the Blazers going for 427 yards of total offensive with 336 of those yards coming on the ground. The marked the third consecutive game that the Blazers have surpassed 300 rushing yards and fourth consecutive 200 rushing yard game.  Those yards came on 60 rushing attempts with Belhaven averaging 5.6 yards per carry and picking up three rushing scores as well. 

Following up their impressive shutout of Sul Ross last weekend, the Blazers defense was stout again on Saturday. Belhaven allowed just 276 yards of total offense to Howard Payne including only 64 yards on the ground. Belhaven compiled 7.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 total sacks as a unit. 

On offense, Brad Foley led the way for the Blazers finishing with 158 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Foley averaged 5.6 yards per carry and his 57-yard touchdown run was the longest of the game. Kolbe Blunt finished with 94 yards on the ground on 13 carries while picking up a touchdown of his own. Mayowa Asagunla tacked on 84 rushing yards on 14 carries as the Belhaven three-headed ground attack once again was domninant. Asagunla also finished 6-16 through the air for 91 yards while Michael Simpson led the receiving corp with 71 yards on four catches. 

Defensively, Connor Fordham finished the game with seven total tackles, a team high, as well as 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sack. Demetrius Brokenberry finished with 1.5 sacks in the game to lead the Blazers while Carlton Brown with 1.5 tackles for loss as well as a blocked field goal attempt. 

With the win, the Blazers improve to 5-2 on the season and 4-2 in ASC play. They'll now head to Belton, Texas to face #2 Mary Hardin-Baylor before heading home in two weeks for homecoming against McMurry. Kickoff in Belton is set 12 PM.
