BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Belhaven University volleyball team fell in a four-set battle with the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets in American Southwest Conference play. With the loss, the Blazers move to 2-19 overall and 1-12 in conference play.
In the first set, the Yellow Jackets dominated the first set by a final score of 25-10. In the second set, the Blazers and Jackets went back and forth for the majority of the set. The Blazers got as close as two points in the set, but could not overcome the deficit. Howard Payne would go on to take the 25-22 set victory.
The Blazers knew the third set was a must win set and they did just that. Belhaven got off to a slow start, but came back and took the 14-13 advantage. The Blazers then went on a 10-1 run to make the score 24-14 late in the third set. The Green and Gold capitalized to get the 25-17 third set victory. In the fourth set, the Blazers had to 22-19 advantage, until the Jackets rallied back and fired off six straight points to take 25-22 set victory and the 3-1 match victory.
Izabella Erickson and
Caitlin Torok led the Blazers offensively with 11 kills apiece, while
Callista Moore finished the match with seven kills.
Emily Carroll and Grace Laukfuf posted three service aces and
Ellie Jones added two service aces and led the Blazers with four blocks.
Grace Eidson tallied 18 assists in the contest and
Avery Evans-Brooks finished the even with a team high 12 digs.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, October 23 against the Sul Ross State University Lobos in Alpine, Texas. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
