JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven University women's basketball team fell in a close 74-68 contest to open American Southwest Conference play. Belhaven dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Blazers started the game cold from the field, as the Lobos took a quick 9-0 advantage with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter. The Blazers broke the Lobos run after
Ashanti Lipscomb drilled a three-pointer to put Belhaven on the board to bring the score to 9-3. On the following possession, the Blazers scored another bucket from behind the arc to cut the lead to just three points. For the remainder of the quarter each team exchanged baskets to make the score 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blazers and Lobos exchanged free throws to begin the second quarter. The Blazers took the first lead of the game, after a made layup by
Ladedra Bryant and another three point basket by
Ashanti Lipscomb to bring the score to 24-23 with 2:11 remaining in the half.
Mariah Collins made a layup and knocked down a free throw on an old fashioned three point play to tie the game up at 27 going into halftime.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Green and Gold extended their lead to six points, but the Lobos fought back to even the score at 35 at the 4:08 mark. Belhaven and Sul Ross exchanged leads for the rest of the quarter with the Lobos holding the slight 44-42 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Green and Gold struggled from the field in the fourth quarter as the Lobos extended their lead to the largest of the game. The Blazers had an opportunity to win it late in the fourth quarter, but the Lobos took the 64-58 victory.
Mariah Collins led the Blazers with 15 points, four steals, and six assists.
Kourtne Lee and
Ladedra Bryant both scored 10 points in the loss and
Ashanti Lipscomb posted eight points and shot 50 percent from the field.
The Blazers will return to action against Howard Payne University in Rugg Arena on Saturday, January 9
th at 1:00 p.m.
