BELTON, Texas - The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team took to the road on Saturday, January 15, to face off against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru. Despite a valiant effort from the Blazers, the Cru came away with a 75-63 victory on the hardwood.
In the first quarter, the Cru jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after the first five minutes of play in the first quarter, and finished out the quarter outscoring the Blazers 5-2 increasing their lead to 14-6. The Blazers came out with a strong surge to start the second quarter cutting the Cru lead to 24-21 with around four minutes remaining. However, the Blazers could not regain the lead as they were outscored 11-4 and the Cru took a 35-25 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
The third quarter started with neither team finding a rhythm offensively in the opening minutes; however, the Cru extended their lead to 44-27 with five minutes left in the quarter. The Blazers then proceeded to outscore the Cru 15-10 over the final five minutes of the third quarter, but were still trailing 54-42 as the horn sounded to end the quarter. The fourth quarter saw both teams score 21 points apiece, but the Cru maintained their lead throughout the quarter to seal the 75-63 win over the Blazers.
Offensively the Blazers were lead by senior guard
Janae Collier who accounted for 15 points and shared a team-high in blocks with three. Junior center
Ladedra Bryant added 12 points, while senior guard
Mariah Collins tacked on 11 points and had the shared team-high with Collier in blocks. Senior forward
Sydney Martin added nine points on the night and led the team in rebounds with 12.
The Blazers fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in American Southwest Conference play and will return to action on Thursday, January 21, as they play host to the University of the Ozarks Eagles. The action is set to tip-off at 5 p.m., at Rugg Arena.
