LONGVIEW, Texas - The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team faced off against the LeTorneau University YellowJackets on Thursday, January 28. The YellowJackets came away with 77-54 victory on the hardwood.
The contest opening minutes saw the YellowJackets jump out to an early lead; however, the Blazers battled back and trailed 11-9 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. The YellowJackets finished out the quarter with an 8-4 scoring run to grow their lead to 19-13. LeTorneau continued to expand their lead throughout the second quarter with a 9-5 scoring run as the Blazers trailed 28-18 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. The Blazers continued to battle throughout the remainider of the second quarter, but the YellowJackets would hold on to the lead, 44-27, going into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Blazers started the third quarter with a 7-5 scoring run over the opening two minutes, but trailed the YellowJackets 49-34 with eight minutes left in the quarter. The YellowJackets then responded with a 13-5 scoring run to close out the quarter and grow their lead to 62-39. Both teams added 15 points apiece to their respective scores in the fourth quarter to seal the 77-54 victory for LeTorneau.
Senior point guard
Mariah Collins led the Blazers offense with 12 points, while senior center
Destiny Johnson added nine points and eight rebounds. Senior guard
Janae Collier had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds during the contest, while freshman guard
Ashanti Lipscomb and freshman point guard
Kourtne Lee added seven and six points respectively.
The Blazers fall to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference play and will return to action with a road contest against the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Saturday, January 30. The action is set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
