CLERMONT, Fla. - The Belhaven Blazers swept their way through their second day of action in the Division III Spring Games on Wednesday, March 11, against a pair of opponents from branches of Penn State University.
Game One
In the first game of the day, the Blazers defeated the Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks by a final of 6-4.
The Blazers got on the board first with a solo run in the top of the second inning as
Abby Mondy reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by
Marlee Blackwell to give the Blazers the early 1-0 lead. The Blazers added another solo run in the third inning as
Elizabeth Taggard smashed a solo home run, her second of the season, to lead off the inning and increased the Blazers lead to 2-0. The next three runs for the Blazers came in the fourth as Mondy reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mondy later scored on an RBI triple by
Madison Miller, who then scored as
Allie Gordon crushed a ball to right field for a two-run home run, her fourth of the season, to give the Blazers a 5-0 lead.
The final run for the Blazers came in the sixth inning as
Elizabeth Platt led off the inning with a single for her first career hit as a member of the Blazers softball team, and then later scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Blackwell. The Nittany Lions plated a pair of runs in the sixth, and another pair in the seventh, while getting the tying run to the plate, but a fielder's choice followed by a game-ending strikeout for
Hannah Finley secured the 6-4 victory for the Blazers.
Dallas Blaker got the start for the Blazers and earned her second win of the season improving to 2-1. Blaker pitched five shutout innings allowing seven hits with one strikeout, while
Mariah Sosa pitched 1 and 1/3 innings of relief allowing four runs on one hit, three walks and one hit-by-pitch, and
Hannah Finley earned her third save of the season pitching the final 2/3 of an inning allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Game Two
In the second game of the day, the Blazers used a huge first inning en route to an 18-1 victory over Penn State New Kensington.
In the bottom of the first, the Blazers sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring ten runs in the inning as
Marlee Blackwell,
Allie Gordon,
Elizabeth Taggard,
Haley Hanson,
May Hebert,
Sarah Depperschmidt,
Carley Ingle, and
Madison Miller all scored runs with Blackwell and Gordon scoring twice in the inning to give the Blazers a 10-0 lead. In the inning, Taggard had a two-RBI double, Miller had a two-RBI single, while Gordon had an RBI single in all three player's second plate appearances in the inning.
The Blazers added six more runs in the third inning as AP Montesi led off with a double, then advanced on a single by
Abby Mondy, as
Brittany Chetta drew a walk to load the bases for the Blazers. Montesi then scored on a single by
Keirra Fair, while
Abby Trahan then reached on fielder's choice as Mondy was forced out at the plate. Chetta then scored as
May Hebert drew a walk, as Fair scored on an RBI groundout by Depperschmidt. Trahan and Hebert then scored on a two-RBI double by
Carley Ingle who then later scored on an RBI single by Montesi, her second hit of the inning, extending the Blazers lead to 16-0.
The lone run for the Nittany Lions came in the top of the fourth inning as the Blazers final two came in the bottom half led off with three consecutive singles by
Hannah Finley,
Marissa Rice, and
Bailey Root to load the bases for the Blazers. Finley later scored on an RBI single by
Dallas Blaker, while Root scored on an RBI single by Montesi, her third hit of the game and second RBI, giving the Blazers an 18-1 lead. The Nittany Lions went down in order in the top of the fifth to secure the win for the Blazers.
Kassie Shipley got the start for the Blazers pitching two shutout, no-hit innings with one strikeout.
Abby Prescott pitched the final three innings picking up her first win of the season allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts.
The Blazers improve to 12-3 overall and will return to action with one more doubleheader in their final day of action at the Division III Spring Games on Thursday, March 12. The Blazers will face the Washington College Shorewomen at 3 p.m., and then will play the Beloit College Buccaneers aat 5 p.m.
