CLERMONT, Fla. - The Belhaven Blazers Softball team swept their second straight doubleheader in their final day at the Division III Spring Games.
Game One
The Blazers won their first game of the day against the Washington College Shorewomen, 7-1. Belhaven got on the board first in the game with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning as
Anna Peyton Montesi drew a walk to get the Blazers offense going in the inning as
Sarah Depperschmidt followed with a single. Both players then scored as
Marlee Blackwell hit a two-RBI triple, part of a four hit game for Blackwell, giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
The lone run for the Shorewomen came in the bottom of the third inning, while the Blazers added a trio of runs in the fifth inning as Blackwell led off with a single. The Blazers then loaded the bases as
Allie Gordon singled, then
Elizabeth Taggard drew a walk. Blackwell then scored as
Abby Trahan hit an RBI single in a pinch hit appearance, Gordon scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brittany Chetta, while Taggard scored on an RBI single by
Haley Hanson during a pinch hit appearance increasing the Blazers lead to 5-1.
The final two runs for the Blazers came in the seventh inning as Taggard led off with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Chetta. Hanson then hit her second single of the game followed up with a single by Montesi, as Hanson then scored on an RBI single by Depperschmidt giving the Blazers a 7-1 lead. The Blazers held the Shorewomen scoreless in the bottom of the seventh as the final out was made at home plate to seal the victory.
Kassie Shipley got the start for the Blazers and pitched a complete game picking up her second win of the season improving to 2-1. Shipley gave up one run on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Game Two
In the final game of the day the Blazers beat the Beloit Buccaneers by a final of 5-3. The Blazers once again got on the board first with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first inning as
Allie Gordon got the Blazers offense going with a triple and then scored on a double by
Elizabeth Taggard. Taggard then scored on a double by
May Hebert who then scored on a single by
Keirra Fair to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers added a solo run in the second inning as
Abby Trahan drew a walk and then later scored on an RBI single by Taggard to increase the Blazers lead to 4-0. Another solo run in the third inning for the Blazers increased the lead to 5-0 as
Bailey Root singled and later scored on an RBI single by
Marlee Blackwell. The Buccaneers plated a solo run in the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the seventh as the tying run was at the plate, but the rally was halted with a groundout to secure the Blazers victory.
Bailey Root got the start for the Blazers and picked up her team-leading seventh win on the season improving to 7-1. Root pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Hannah Finley pitched 1/3 of an inning in a relief appearance allowing two earned runs on one hit and one walk.
The Blazers improve to 14-3 overall and have won eight consecutive games dating back to the doubleheader sweep of Hardin-Simmons University on March 6. The Blazers will return to action with a mid-week doubleheader against the Agnes Scott Scotties on Tuesday, March 17. The games are scheduled to played at 1 and 3 p.m.
