CLERMONT, Fla. – The Belhaven University softball team took care of business in the first game of the Division III Spring Games on Tuesday morning. The Blazers defeated the Hawks 6-4 to improve to 10-3 on the year.
The Blazers got things rolling early on when
Haley Hanson hit a triple down the right field line to score
Madison Miller and
Allie Gordon to give the Green and Gold the 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. In the top of the third inning, Becker College platted a run to narrow the lead to 2-1, but Belhaven answered scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend the Blazers lead to 4-1.
The Hawks answered in the top of the fourth inning scoring two runs on one hit to narrow the score to 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Belhaven tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning when
Allie Gordon hit a sacrifice fly to score pitch runner
Keirra Fair to make the score 5-3. Becker added a run in the top of the 5
th, but in the sixth inning Belhaven tit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 6-4. The Blazers shut down the Hawks the rest of the game to earn the 6-4 victory over the Becker College Hawks.
Haley Hanson led the Blazers at the plate going 2-for-2 and had 2 RBI, while
Madison Miller and Marlee Blazers assed two hits in the contest.
Allie Gordon,
Elizabeth Taggard,
Abby Trahan, and
Sarah Depperschmidt each recorded a hit in the game.
Bailey Root got the start and the win in the circle for the Blazers.
Hannah Finley came on in relief to earn her second save on the season.
The Blazers will return to the field tomorrow, March 10 for a doubleheader against Penn State Burks and Penn State New Kensington. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
