Blazers Get Overtime Win Over WarHawks in ASC Play

ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven University Blazers Men's Basketball team took to the road to face off against the McMurry University WarHawks on Thursday, Febraury 6, and the Blazers came away with a 94-89 overtime victory on the hardwood.

The WarHawks jumped out to a 22-12 lead in the first ten minutes of the first half; however, the Blazers used a quick 8-3 scoring run to cut the lead down to 25-20 with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The WarHawks once again pushed the lead to double digits to 37-24 with three minutes left in the first half, but once again the Blazers used a big scoring run, outscoring the WarHawks 11-2 over the final minutes of the first half, cutting the lead to 39-35 going into the locker rooms at halftime.

The second half began with the Blazers and WarHawks trading baskets in the opening minutes; however, the WarHawks once again strecthed their lead back to double digits, 50-40 with 15 minutes remaining in the game. The Blazers once again responded with a scoring run of 17-9 to cut the lead down to 59-57 with nine minutes remaining and then gained the lead at 65-63 with around six and a half minutes left in the game. The two teams then began trading baskets and the lead as neither gained more than a four point advantage which the Blazers held at 80-76 with 75 seconds remaining; however, the WarHawks managed to put four points on the board while holding the Blazers scoreless in the final moments to force an overtime period. The Blazers outscored the WarHawks 14-9 in the overtime period with junior guard Joshua Roberts contributing seven of the 14 points and securing the 94-89 victory for the Blazers.

Freshman guard Luke Couch led the Blazers offensively with 27 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block, while Roberts added 15 points with five rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal. Graduate guard Ryan Dupree and freshman guard added 14 points apiece, while senior guard Justin Jones had 12 points. Senior guards Brosnan Cooks and Trai James had eight and four points respectively to round out the scoring for the Blazers.

As a team, the Blazers shot 29-for-60 from the floor for a percentage of 48.3, including going 9-for-28 for a percentage of 32.1 from the three point area, and went 27-for-37 for a percentage of 73.0 from the charity stripe. The Blazers scored 40 points in the paint, 24 points off turnovers, 14 second-chance points, 13 fast-break points, and had 28 points from the bench.

The Blazers improve to 9-11 overall and 6-5 in American Southwest Conference play, and will return to action with a road contest against the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys on Saturday, February 8. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
