ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven University Men's Blazers Basketball team fell to the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys, 94-91, on the road on Saturday, February 8.
The Blazers and Cowboys started the game trading baskets and leads as the game was tied at 9 apiece with 15 minutes left in the first half. The Blazers then went on a 16-11 scoring run to take a 25-20 lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half; however, the Cowboys responded with a 25-16 scoring run to take a 45-41 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Blazers started the second half with a 14-10 scoring run to once again tie the game at 55 each with 15 minutes remaining in the game. The teams then exchanged baskets and leads for the next five minutes as the Blazers took a 69-68 lead with ten minutes left in the game; however, the Cowboys regained the, 76-75, with five minutes remaining. The final five minutes saw the Cowboys extend their lead to five points, but the Blazers fought back continuously chipping away at the lead. However, the Blazers valiant comeback effort would fall short as the Cowboys sunk two free throws late and kept the Blazers from getting off a potential game-tying shot securing the 94-91 victory.
Senior guard
Brosnan Cooks led the Blazers with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds paired with three assists, while freshman guard
Luke Couch added 23 points with three rebounds and two steals. Senior guard
Trai James had 14 points, while freshman guard
Matthew McMillan and senior guard
Justin Jones added 13 points apiece, while senior guard Joshua Roberts added two points to round out the scoring for the Blazers.
As a team, the Blazers shot 29-for-53 for a percentage of 54.7, including 9-for-23 for a percentage of 39.1 from the three point area, and were 24-for-34 for a percentage of 70.6 from the charity stripe. The Blazers scored 26 points in the paint, had nine points off turnovers, three second-chance points, 16 fast-break points, and had 13 points from their bench.
The Blazers fell to 9-12 overall and 6-6 in American Southwest Conference play and will return to action as they host the UT-Dallas Comets on Thursday, February 13. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
