LONGVIEW, Texas - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fell 69-56 at LeTourneau University on Saturday in their final regular season game of the year.
Early in the game, both teams traded baskets, scoring a combined 46 points with both teams going an identical 8-24 from the field. The Blazers would go 4-9 from three but a 7-0 free throw advantage would put the hosts up 26-20 at the end of the quarter. After a high scoring first quarter, both teams struggled in the second quarter with Belhaven going 4-18 from the field and scoring 11 points.
At the half, the Blazers would trail 36-31 but in the third quarter, LeTourneau would extend their lead outscoring the Blazers 22-9. Belhaven would try to close the gap late but fall 69-56 on the road.
As a team, the Blazers shot 26.3% (21-80) from the field and 27.6% (8-29) from three while attempting nine free throws. They were led individually by
Mariah Collins who scored 21 points, her second highest total of the season, which also led both teams. Collins was 6-18 from the field and 5-11 from behind the arc.
The Blazers now will turn their attention to the postseason where they have earned a spot in the ASC Championship Tournament. The tournament is set to be hosted by UT Dallas and the Blazers, as the fourth seed in the East Division, will face Mary Hardin-Baylor, the top seed in the West Division. That quarterfinal contest is set for Thursday, February 27th at 2:30 PM.
