Baseball Drops ASC Opening Series to Concordia University

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team dropped both ends of a double header on Saturday to #23 Concordia University falling 8-1 in game one and 6-4 in the game two.

Game 1

In the first game of the afternoon, the two teams squared off in a seven-inning game in which the visitors took an early lead through a four-run inning in the top half of the second. In the fourth, Concordia would tack on another pair after two errors from the Blazers in the field.

The Blazers would surrender two more runs in the top half of the sixth inning before scoring their lone run of the game in the bottom half of the seventh when Noah Holmes delivered a pinch hit, sacrifice fly that scored Gasper D'Anna.

In the first game Austin Howland started for the Blazers and threw 3 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs, six total on 10 hits. He took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season. Brandon Foncree threw 2 2/3 innings in relief allowing a pair of runs on three hits while striking out three.

At the plate, the Blazers totaled four hits against Concordia recorded by Nick Lucido, Gasper D'Anna, Adam Leonard and Trip Benson.

Game 2

In the second game of the day and the third game of the series, the Blazers got on the board first after Caleb Whittle delivered an RBI single that scored Justin Milam. Belhaven would add on to their 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI double from Luke Walters followed by a single from Justin Milam that scored another pair of runs. 

Belhaven would lead 4-0 through four innings but Concordia would scratch across a single run in the top halves of the fifth and sixth innings. Trailing 4-2 entering the seventh, the visitors would score four runs in the top half of the frame and take a 6-4 lead. After scoring four in the first three innings, the Blazers were held scoreless the remainder of the nine inning game. 

Brett Sanchez got the start in the second game for Belhaven and went 6 2/3 innings allowing six runs on eleven hits along with seven strikeouts. Brenen Jeanpierre pitched a scoreless ninth inning allowing just a walk.

Hunter White was tabbed as the leadoff man for Belhaven in Game 2 and delivered with two doubles and a run scored. Justin Milam went 2-4 in the second game with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Nathan Herron was the DH for Belhaven and went 2-4 in the second game of the day. 

Following the series loss, the Blazers will look to rebound Tuesday, February 25th when they host Rhodes College in a midweek matchup. First pitch at Smith-Wills Stadium is set for 4 PM.
