JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven University baseball team earned their first victory of the season by defeating Fontbonne University by a final score of 7-3 in the Home Opener at Smith Wills Stadium.With the win, the Blazers improve to 1-2 overall on the early season.
Hunter Sanford struck out the side in the top of the first inning.
AJ Bratton's RBI triple got the Blazers on the board, scoring
Nick Lucido to make the score 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
Evan Moore reached base safely on a fielder's choice and scored
AJ Bratton to extend the Blazers' lead to 2-0 at the end of the second inning.
For the next three innings, the Green and Gold and Fontbonne remained scoreless. After a leadoff walk by Fontbonne in the top of the sixth inning, the Blazers capitalized when
AJ Bratton hit a sacrifice fly to score
Trip Benson to bring the score to 4-0.
Logan Walters reached base on an error by the right fielder to extend the lead to 5-0 heading into the top of the seventh. The Blazers' defense held strong in the seventh to keep Fontbonne scoreless through seven innings. In the bottom of the seventh,
Caleb Whittle was hit by pitch, then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-0.
Fontbonne got their first run across in the top of the eight, but the Blazers answered in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 7-1 through 8 innings. The Griffins tacked on two more runs in the ninth, but the Blazers prevailed and earned the 7-3 victory in game one of the three game series with Fontbonne.
AJ Bratton went 1-for3 at the plate and had three RBI, while
Nick Lucido and
Reed Bolton had two hits in the contest.
Trip Benson and
Logan Walters were the other two Blazers to record a hit in the game. As a team, Belhaven had seven hits and three stolen bases.
The Blazers will return to the field tomorrow, February 15 for a doubleheader against Fontbonne University at Smith Wills Stadium. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
