CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The Belhaven University women's basketball team picked up the 65-61 victory over the University of the Ozarks Eagles in conference play. With the win, the Blazers improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in ASC play. Additionally,
Steve Calder earned his 60
th victory as the Head Coach of the Blazers.
The Blazers fell behind early in the first quarter, but
Peyton Papenburg's three pointer gave the Green and Gold a 12-10 advantage over the Eagles late in the first quarter. Belhaven and the Ozarks were tied up at 15 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles outshot the Blazers 11-8 in the second quarter to give the Ozarks the 26-23 lead at the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, the Blazers and Eagles exchanged the lead for the majority of the third quarter to bring the score to 37-37 heading into the final quarter of regulation. The Green and Gold took the early advantage, but the Ozarks regained the lead and held on to the lead until the 2:37 mark in the fourth quarter. The Blazers continued to shoot well to close out the quarter and game to earn the 65-61 victory over the University of the Ozarks Eagles.
Peyton Papenburg led the Green and Gold with 21 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Additionally, she had four assists and shot 43 percent from three point range.
Keke Lyles finished the night with 17 points, five steals, and went 3-for-5 from the charity stripe. As a team, the Blazers shot 34.5 percent from behind the arc and 60 percent from the free throw line.
The Blazers returns to action on Saturday, January 18 against the UT-Dallas Comets in Richardson, Texas. Tip-off is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
