JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Women's Soccer team kicked off their season on Friday against cross-town rival Millsaps inside the Belhaven Bowl Stadium and the Blazers came away with a 2-0 victory.
"This was huge and I think it puts a good face on the entire season. This was a really good match and our girls worked all the way to the last minute," said Head Women's Soccer Coach
Kimberly Harrell.
The first goal for the Blazers came midway through the first half at the 22 minute mark, when senior defender
Kacey Chopin lofted a cross into the box just over the Millsaps goalkeeper that landed at the feet of senior midfielder
Suzanne Dease, who then buried the ball into the back of the net to give the Blazers the 1-0 lead.
"That was a huge goal for us. I knew that as soon as we got the first goal that we would calm down and play our game, which is exactly what we did," said Harrell.
The second Blazers goal came in the 64th minute as freshman defender
Lina Lynch took a throw in, aiming the ball into the box allowing senior midfielder
Jennifer Hosey to lob a ball over the goalkeeper's head into the back of the net and sealed the 2-0 victory for the Blazers.
The win is also a historical significant marker for Belhaven University as it was the Blazers first win as full members of the NCAA.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, August 31, as they host Centenary College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m., inside the Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
