ATLANTA, Ga. - The Belhaven Blazers Volleyball team kicked off their 2019 season at the Emory Classic hosted by Emory University on Friday. Belhaven had a pair of matches on the first day of the tournament taking on Piedmont College in their first match of the day followed by Emory & Henry College.
Belhaven would fall to Piedmont College in their first match on Friday in four sets.The Blazers winning set came early as they picked up a 25-23 victory in set one. Sophomore
Chelsea Creighton would lead Belhaven in kills with ten. Junior
Sydney McEachern recorded 20 digs in the match against Piedmont which topped the team. Sophomore
Grace Eidson led Belhaven with 18 assists.
In their second match of the day, the Blazers would bounce back to win a thriller against Emory & Henry College defeating the Wasps in five sets. After picking up wins in sets one and two, 29-27 and 25-15 respectively, the Blazers would end up taking the winner-take-all fifth set 15-11. Sophomore
Callista Moore led Belhaven with 13 kills and
Chelsea Creighton followed with 11 kills of her own. Similarly to the first match,
Sydney McEachern led the Blazers in digs with 19 against the Wasps.
Grace Laukhuf topped the Belhaven team with 20 assists.
Following the first day of the Emory Classic, the Blazers now hold a 1-1 record as they head towards day two. They'll close out their time in Atlanta with a pair of matches on Saturday first taking on Oglethorpe University (2-0) at 10 a.m. before facing #8 Johnson & Wales University (1-1) at 12:30 p.m.
