THE RUNDOWN
ALPINE, Texas– The Belhaven University softball team fell in both games of the doubleheader at Sul Ross State University on Friday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play. The Lobos defeated the Blazers 7-0 and 5-2 to take the doubleheader and the series.
The Blazers and the Lobos were locked in for the first three innings of play, as it appeared to be a pitcher's duel early in game one.
Sul Ross opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning when Canaba came around to score on a wild pitch to take the 1-0 lead over the Green and Gold.
SRSU's offense remained hot as Hardin opened the fifth frame with a bases clearing double to extend their lead to 4-0.
Still in the fifth inning, after two RBI singles and a bases loaded walk, the Lobos tacked on three additional runs to bring the score to 7-0.
The Blazers could not find any momentum in game as the Lobos took game one by a final score of 7-0. With the win, the Lobos earn a spot in the ASC Tournament.
Abbey Allen got the start at second base for the Blazers and scored the first of the contest in game two on a
Marlee Blackwell RBI groundout to take the 1-0 advantage over the Lobos.
Sul Ross responded in the bottom half of the second inning with a RBI-single to even the score at 1-1.
The score remained scoreless in the third inning, but after a two-run single and a RBI single in the fourth inning the Lobos took the 4-1 lead over the Green and Gold.
SRSU added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-1 going into the final inning of play.
In the seventh, the Blazers plated a run off of a bases loaded walk to bring home
Allie Gordon to make the score 5-2.
The Green and Gold would drop game two by a final score of 5-2, as the Lobos took both games of the double header.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Anna Peyton Montesi led the Green and Gold going a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate.
Danielle Darmohray went 2-for-3 from the plate, while
Marlee Blackwell and
Kassie Shipley tallied a hit in the contest.
Bailey Root took the loss in the circle for Belhaven, as she tossed 3.1 innings, giving up one hit and one run in the game.
Abby Prescott,
Mariah Sosa, and
Jordan Self came in relief for the Green and Gold.
As a team in game one, the Blazers had six hits in the contest.
In game two,
Abbey Allen led the Blazers going 3-for-3 from the plate and scored one run in the contest.
Marlee Blackwell and
Allie Gordon finished the game with a couple of hits apiece in the game. Additionally, Blackwell had a RBI and Gordon scored a run during the game.
Carley Ingle posted the other RBI in the contest.
Kassie Shipley earned the start in the circle for the Blazers, but took the loss after pitching four complete innings.
Jordan Self came in relief of Shipley and closed out the ballgame, giving up only three hits.
As a team, the Green and Gold posted two runs on seven hits.

The Blazers will return to the field on Saturday, April 27 against the Sul Ross State Lobos for the final game of the 2019 season. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
