Softball Stumbles in Doubleheader against UMHB on Senior Day

THE RUNDOWN

JACKSON, Miss.– The Belhaven University softball team dropped an American Southwest Conference doubleheader to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, falling 12-3 in game one and 6-4 in game two.

The Blazers honored four seniors: Meghan Luker, Brianna Dollar, Jordan Self, and Danielle Darmohray.

The Blazers held the lead early in game one after Allie Gordon hit an RBI single to the shortstop to score Marlee Blackwell from third base to make the score 1-0 after one inning.

The Cru answered with five runs in the top of the second inning to bring the score to 5-1.

UMHB continued to pile on the runs, as the Cru plated three runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 8-1.

The score remained the same throughout the fourth inning, but in the fifth inning the Green and Gold posted two runs to cut the lead to 8-3.

The Crusaders bats continued to pop, posting four runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 12-3. The Blazers failed to rally in the sixth and would end up losing game one by a final score of 12-3 in six innings.

In game two, the first two innings were scoreless, as it appeared to be a pitcher's duel early on.

UMHB struck first in the top of the third inning, but Belhaven answered back with a run of its own to tie the ball game up at 1-1.

The Cru went on to add three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

The Blazers cut the lead to just one run after Danielle Darmohray drilled a RBI single through the left side to score Anna Peyton Montesi and a bases loaded walk to score Bailey Root, making the score 4-3 with the Cru holding on to the slight advantage over the Blazers.

After back-to-back singles and a double in the top of sixth inning, the Cru tallied two additional runs to bring the score to 6-3 after six complete innings.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Carley Ingle hit a sacrifice fly to score Bailey Root to make the final score 6-4 with the Blazers coming up short in game two.
