MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Belhaven University baseball team fell late to the Rhodes College Lynx by a final score of 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Blazers struck first in the top of the first inning, after
Logan Walters reached on a fielding error to score
Tucker Calhoun, giving Belhaven the early lead.
Trip Benson drilled a two-run single to center field to plate
AJ Bratton and
Nathan Herron to extend their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning. The Lynx got a run back in the bottom half of the inning after a solo shot by Palermo.
The Green and Gold could not find any momentum in the next three innings, but Rhodes College found an offensive spark to take the 7-3 advantage after five complete innings.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Hunter White hit an RBI-double to chip away at the Lynx lead. White later in the inning scored off of a bases loaded walk to make the score 7-5 with the Lynx held on to the slight advantage. Still in the sixth inning and the bases loaded,
Logan Walters was hit by pitch scoring
Hunter White to end the inning with just a one run deficit. The Blazers were behind 7-6 after six innings.
The score remained the same throughout the seventh inning, but in the top of the eighth inning the Green and Gold took the 8-7 lead off of a couple of RBI-singles from
Josh Rogers and
Nathan Herron.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Paul Giacomazz hit a two-run bomb to give the Lynx the 9-8 advantage.
The Blazers regained the lead in the top of the ninth inning after
Hunter White drilled a two-run homer to bring the score to 10-9.
Belhaven was unable to hold off Rhodes in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Lynx plated two runs in the inning to win by a final score of 11-10.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Hunter White led the Blazers going 2-for-5 from the plate with 3 RBI and scored twice, while
Nathan Herron also had two hits in the contest.
Trip Benson had three hits on the afternoon and had two runs batted in.
Six other Blazers were responsible for a hit during the game.
As a team, the Green and Gold had 13 hits and eight walks.
Nine Blazers registered at least on hit during the contest.
Justin Milam took the loss on the mound for the Blazers, tossing 1.1 innings and gave up three earned runs.
UP NEXT
The Blazers will return to the field on Friday afternoon against the Concordia Texas Tornados in Austin, Texas. First pitch of the double header is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
