THE RUNDOWN
BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Belhaven University baseball team was swept over the weekend by the top ranked ASC team, Howard Payne, after falling to the Yellow Jackets 18-8 on Saturday afternoon in game three of the series.
For the second game in a row for the Blazers, they quickly fell behind to arguably the best team in conference play. The Yellow Jackets, winners of 10 games in a row, and an unbeaten record of 9-0 in the American Southwest Conference, showed why they were the top team over the weekend, defeating the Blazers 8-5 in game one on Friday and 19-8 in game two.
Saturday was no different as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead after three innings. Yet, Belhaven had plans of their own in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on three hits from Steven Liuzza, Justin Milam, and Nathan Herron to make it 9-3.
In the same inning Hunter White quickly erased that deficit, hitting a grand slam to put the Blazers within a 9-7 score. In the next inning, Trip Benson doubled to right center field to score Tucker Calhoun as Belhaven trailed 10-8.
Despite the near comeback from the Blazers, the Yellow Jackets utilized a two run seventh inning and a six run eighth inning to push their lead out and ultimately defeat the Blazers by a final score of 18-8.
Belhaven fell to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Howard Payne improved to 12-7 overall and 9-0 in the conference to remain alone at the top of the conference by a margin of six games. To view the full American Southwest Conference baseball standings, click here.
