THE RUNDOWN
BROWNWOOD, Texas-The Belhaven University baseball team dropped two games on Friday afternoon at Howard Payne, losing by a final score of 8-5 in game one and then falling 19-8 in game two.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning of game one Friday, Belhaven struck with two runs in top half of the second inning on a triple to left field by Nick Lucido that plated Trip Benson for the first run. The second run came moments later from a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Steven Liuzza, scoring Lucido to pull within 3-2.
Howard Payne scored four total runs in the second and fourth innings combined, taking a 7-2 advantage. Belhaven plated three more runs in the fifth and seventh innings with the help of an RBI double from Justin Milam and RBI single from Trip Benson. Unfortunately, the comeback was not enough as the Yellow Jackets won by a final of 8-5 in game one.Â
Game two started off on the wrong end for the Blazers as they fell behind 8-0 in the first two innings. Belhaven slowly began to chip away at the HPU lead, pulling within an 8-3 score after six innings, before HPU truly put the game away in the bottom half of the sixth inning with 11 total runs scored to make it 19-3.Â
Home runs from Josh Rogers and Noah Holmes helped decrease the Yellow Jacket lead, yet the Blazers ultimately fell in game two by a final score of 19-8 to drop the first two games of the three-game ASC series.
With the losses, Belhaven fell to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Howard Payne improved to 11-7 overall and 8-0 in the conference.Â
