Tigers Take Two From Blazers on Tuesday

THE RUNDOWN

JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven University softball team fell to the Jackson State University Tigers on Tuesday night by final scores of 4-1 and 5-2 in non-conference play.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Tigers struck first, scoring a run in the bottom half of the second inning with a single to left field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Belhaven tied the game up in the third inning when Bailey Root singled to score Allie Gordon. Jackson State eventually scored two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the sixth, taking the 4-1 victory in game one.

Game two was promising for the Blazers, who have been decimated with injuries thus far in the early goings of the season.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Belhaven struck back with two runs in the third inning with two based loaded walks to give Belhaven a 2-1 lead.

Unfortunately, the Tigers rebounded with four unanswered runs in fifth and sixth inning, after only having a total of one hit in each of the previous four innings.

Belhaven fell in game two by a final score of 5-2, falling to 3-7 overall on the season.

BU Head Coach Kevin Griffin Comments on the Doubleheader Loss

"Tonight was better as we are still trying to piece things together after all of our injuries.  Our pitching staff continues to pitch good enough to win games, but collectively we have to come up with big hits with runners in scoring position. There were several positives to take out of tonight's games and that's more than I have been able to say in the past week.  I still love this team and know that together we can still accomplish big things".

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Bailey Root tallied three total hits in five at-bats in both games combined, including an RBI in each of tonight's games with one double.

Allie Gordon and Marlee Blackwell each tallied a hit while Brianna Dollar, Marissa Rice, and Danielle Darmohray all had one hit apiece.

UP NEXT

Belhaven will head to Richardson, Texas this weekend to take on the UT Dallas Comets in a three-game conference series, beginning with a doubleheader Friday night at 12:00 p.m.
