Blazers Fall to Cross-Town Rival Millsaps on the Road

JACKSON, Miss. - The Blazers took to the road to face off against the Millsaps Majors on Tuesday, December 3, and the Majors won by a final of 81-69.

The Blazers and Majors went back and forth trading baskets and the lead in the first five minutes, however, the Majors eventually gained the lead and maintained it throughout the first half. The Blazers never trailed by double-digits throughout the first half with the Majors biggest lead being nine points at the four minute remaining mark, and ultimately the Majors took a 39-31 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Majors stretched their lead to ten points early in the second half; however, the Blazers fought back and whittled the lead down to one point with six minutes to go in the game. The comeback effort for the Blazers fell short as the Majors stormed back and increased the lead to 14 late in the game and ultimately sealed the 81-69 victory.

Guard Ryan Dupree led the Blazers with 21 points to go along with three rebounds, two steals, one block, and one assist. Guard Brosnan Cooks led the team in rebounds with eight to go along with five points and three assits. Forward Brandon Phillips and guard Queshod Young each added eight points, guards Kelvin Pruitt and Joshua Roberts contributed seven points each, guards Justin Jones and Trai James had five points each, while sophomore forward Austin Reed contributed three points to round out the scoring for the Blazers.

As a team, the Blazers shot 24-for-65 for a percentage of 36.9 from the floor including 7-for-20 for a percentage of 35.0 from three and went 14-for-27 for 51.9 percent from the charity stripe. The Blazers had 32 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers, 16 second chance points, 15 fast break points, and got 21 points from their bench.

The Blazers are now 0-4 on the early part of the 2019-20 season and will be back in action on the road at The Rhodes Classic in Memphis, Tennessee. The Blazers will play host Rhodes on Friday, December 13, with tip set for 4 p.m., and then will play Berry College on Saturday, December 14, with tip set for 3 p.m.
