Blazers Earn Overtime Win at Home against Covenant College

JACKSON, MISS. - The Belhaven Blazers Men's Basketball team played host to the Covenant College Scots on Saturday, December 28, and the Blazers used a come-from-behind effort to force overtime, and then earned a 93-85 victory in the extra period.

The Blazers got off to a strong start as they gained a 10-3 lead over the Scots in the first four minutes of the game; however, the Scots fought back and eventually held a 22-15 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Both teams then proceeded to trade buckets and leads throughout the remainder of the half with the Scots ultimately holding a 36-34 into the locker room at halftime.

The Scots came storming out in the second half pushing their lead to 47-38 with 17:22 remaining in the game; however, the Blazers fought back and whittled the lead down to 57-56 with 9:28 left in the game. The Blazers continued their come-from-behind effort against the Scots by not letting the lead get to more than four points, and then took a late 72-71 lead with 1:46 remaining in the game; however, once again both teams traded buckets and the lead until freshman guard Luke Couch beat a Scots defender for a layup to tie the game at 75 apiece with 15 seconds left. The Blazers defense held and forced the game into overtime.

The Blazers got off to a strong start in the overtime period scoring the first six points in the first one and a half minutes taking an 81-75 lead. The Blazers never trailed throughout the remainder of the game pushing the lead to 89-79 with 51 seconds left and ultimately closed out the game with timely made free throws to seal the 93-85 victory.

Senior guard Brosnan Cooks led the Blazers and all scorers with a career-high of 42 points to go along with six assists, a team-high five rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Senior guard Trai James had a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 12 assists, while Couch added 13 points. Junior guard Josh Roberts had seven points, senior guard Justin Jones had six points, sophomore guard Nehemiah Womack added five points, sophomore forward Austin Reed had three points, junior forward Brandon Phillips had two points, and senior guard Queshod Young had one point to round out the scoring for the Blazers.

As a team the Blazers were 35-for-60 for a percentage of 58.3 including 6-for-21 for a percentage of 28.6 from the three point arc, and went 17-30 for a percentage of 56.7 from the charity stripe. The Blazers scored 56 points in the paint, had 23 points off turnovers, 13 fast break points, six second chance points, and had 11 points from the bench.

The Blazers improve to 3-5 on the season and will return to action on Monday, December 30, as they play host to the Huntingdon College Hawks. The action is set to tip-off at 5 p.m., inside Rugg Arena.
