JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers played host to the Rhodes Lynx in men's basketball action on Tuesday, November, 26, and the Lynx came away with a 108-98 win over the Blazers.
The Blazers came out with a strong showing to start the first half building an 11-point lead over the Lynx with 12:49 left on the clock; however, the Lynx battled back to tie the game and take a small lead with 5:57 remaining in the first half. The two teams would then trade baskets while alternating ties and lead changes throughout the remainder of the first half until the Lynx had a late three with 0:04 left in the half and the Blazers were unable to respond giving the Lynx a 51-48 lead at half.
The two teams once again started the second half trading buckets for the first five minutes, but then the Lynx would go on a 23 point scoring run for the next five minutes to take an 85-66 lead at the midway point of the second half. The Blazers would battle throughout the remainder of the half whittling the Lynx lead down to seven points, but could not get any closer to that as the Lynx were able to close out the game and come away with the 108-98 win.
Guards
Brosnan Cooks and
Ryan Dupree led the Blazers offensively with 22 points paired with a team high six assists, while Cooks also finished with a double-double on the night with ten rebounds to go with the 22 points. Senior guard
Kelvin Pruitt had 16 points, freshman guard
Luke Couch had nine points, senior guards
Justin Jones and
Trai James had eight and seven points respectively, junior guard Joshua Roberts has six points, freshman guard
Matthew McMillan and sophomore forward
Austin Reed had three points each, and junior forward
Jatavius Robinson had two points to round out the scoring for the Blazers.
As a team, the Blazers shot 36-for-64 for a percentage of 56.3 from the floor including 10-for-32 for a percentage of 31.3 from the three and were 16-for-24 for a percentage of 66.7 from the charity stripe. The Blazers had 48 points in the paint, scored 24 points off turnovers, had 13 second chance points, 13 fast break points, and got 23 points from the bench.
The Blazers fall to 0-3 on the early season and will return to action next Tuesday on the road against crosstown rival Millsaps. Tip is set for 8 p.m.
