JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University women's basketball team defeated Huntingdon College 80-61 inside Rugg Arena to remain undefeated on the season. With the win, the Blazers improve to 4-0 on the season.
Peyton Papenburg scored the first 10 points for the Blazers in the first quarter to give Belhaven the early 10-4 advantage over the Hawks. Huntingdon narrowed the lead to two points, but the Blazers held strong through the rest of the quarter to make the score 21-15.
The Green and Gold kept the offensive momentum going to extend the lead to 34-24 midway through the second quarter. The Blazers kept pace with the Hawks to make the score 40-31 going into the halftime break.
Huntingdon scored some early buckets coming out of the break to bring the score to 40-34, but Madison Klein drilled back-to-back three pointers late in the third quarter to give Belhaven the 59-49 advantage going into the final frame.
The Blazers continued to shoot well from the field and outscored the Hawks 21-12 in the fourth quarter to give the Green and gold the 80-61 victory over the Huntingdon Hawks.
Payton Papenburg led the Blazers with 36 points, nine rebounds, and was 75 percent from behind the arc. Additionally, Papenburg shot 17-18 from the charity stripe and was 8-for-14 from the field. Mariah Collins finished the game with 14 points, while Keke Lyles earned 12 points in the win.
As a team, the Green and Gold shot 39 percent from the field and went 28-34 from the free throw line. The Blazers also had 19 steals and scored 34 points off turnovers.
The Blazers will return to the court on Saturday, November 23 against Centenary College inside Rugg Arena. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
