SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team defeated the Mississippi University for Women, 87-68, in their second road game of the 2019-20 season. The Blazers have started the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season, when they opened with five straight wins.
The Blazes led from tip-off to final buzzer in the contest as they jumped out to 28-20 lead after the first quarter, then outscored the Owls 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 49-28 lead at halftime. The Blazers came out in the third quarter and continued to surge including earning their biggest lead of 35 points after a three pointer by junior guard
Keke Lyles and outscoring the Owls 24-17 in the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Owls outscore the Blazers, 23-14, but the Blazers lead would not be overcome earning the Blazers their third win of the season.
Senior guard
Peyton Papenburg led the Blazers offense with 27 points including 5-10 for three point shots while also adding seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals. Lyles was the second leading scorer with 24 points behind a 4-9 performance from the three point area while also adding team highs in assits and steals with seven and five respectively, while junior center
Destiny Johnson led the Blazers in rebounds with eight and blocks with three while adding ten points.
The Blazers shot 39 percent from the field and 28 percent from three while breaking the school record for team threes made with 13 in the game, a mark that the team has now broke twice in their first three games, and shot 83 percent from the charity stripe. The Blazers also had 38 points in the paint, got 16 points from the bench, plus scored 39 points off turnovers, and had 14 fastbreak points.
The Blazers return to action on Thursday, November 21, as they play host to the Huntigndon College Hawks. Tipoff at Rugg Arena is set for 6 p.m.
