SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated the Sewanee Tigers 78-69 in their first road game of the season. The Blazers have started the season with consecutive victories for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
The Blazers fell behind early in the first quarter, as the Tigers capitalized to take the 19-12 advantage going into the second quarter of play. The Tigers kept the momentum in the second quarter until the Blazers evened the score to 29-29 with 35 seconds remaining until the halftime break. The Blazers and Tigers went into the halftime break knotted up at 31-31.
Both teams exchanged baskets for the majority of the third quarter, but Sewanee held on to the lead to bring the score to 54-53 heading into the final frame of regulation.
Madison Klein drilled a three pointer to give the Blazers a two point advantage to open the fourth quarter. The Blazers held the lead for the rest of the game to defeat the Tigers 78-69 to move to 2-0 on the early season.
Keke Lyles led the offensive attack with 26 points and shot 66.6 percent from the field. Additionally, she went 4-for-7 from behind the arc and had an 85.7 free throw percentage.
Peyton Papenburg earned her first double-double of the season scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds, while
Mariah Collins finished the game with 12 points and was 75 percent from the charity stripe.
As a team, the Blazers scored 16 points from the bench and forced 28 turnovers. Bu scored 27 points off of turnovers and had 14 fastbreak points. Belhaven shot 74.2 percent tonight from the charity stripe.
The Blazers will return to action on November 16
th to play in the second contest of the Sewanee Classic. Belhaven will square off against the MUW Owls in Sewanee, Tenn. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
