PINEVILLE, La. - The Belhaven Blazers Women's Soccer team wrapped up regular season play with a road match against the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats on Friday, November 1. A flurry of offensive chances mixed with a stifling defense led the Blazers to a 3-1 victory to close out regular season play.
The Blazers got on the board first in the 28th minute as senior forward
Peyton Papenburg found the back of the net with an assist from senior defender
Emily Malcom giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead; however, the lead was short-lived as the Lady Cats knotted up the game just 40 seconds later with a goal from Rami Mitchell and the game remained tied throughout the first half.
The Blazers broke the tie as junior midfielder
Pepper Ann Filbert scored with an assist from junior forward
Ashley Langham in the 63rd minute to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead, while the final goal for the Blazers came in the 84th minute as Papenburg once again scored with a second assist from Malcom. The two goals for Papenburg during the game give her five goals for the Blazers throughout the final four matches of the regular season.
The Blazers tallied 14 total shots with ten on goal during the match, while sophomore goalkeeper
Georgia Jordan made three saves facing seven total shots with four on goal.
The Blazers finish the regular season 10-8-1 overall and 5-6 in American Southwest Conference play and have secured their first overall winning season since the 2013 campaign. The Blazers also wrap up the regular season with a sixth place finish in the American Southwest Conference and have earned a berth in the ASC Women's Soccer Championship Tourney. The Blazers will be on the road this coming week for a Quarterfinal match against the UT-Dallas Comets on Tuesday, November 5. The match is set to kickoff at 5 p.m.
