JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers women's soccer team played host to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Thursday, October 3, in and the Blazers left the pitch with their first American Southwest Conference win of the season with a 2-1 victory.

The first half of the match was an eventful one as both teams scored goals and had one player apiece sent off due to red cards. After earning a man up advantage with the Yellow Jackets having a player sent off in the 26th minute, the Blazers scored their first goal in the 28th minute as freshman forward Sybil Roberson found the back of the net with an assist from junior midfielder Ashley Langham. Four minutes later the Yellow Jackets knotted up the score as freshman midfielder Katie Burnside squeezed the ball by Blazers goalkeeper, sophomore Georgia Jordan, making the score 1-1 which held up going into halftime despite the Blazers having a player sent off in the 42nd minute eliminating the man up advantage.

Both teams played the entire second half of the match with ten players on their sides while the Blazers broke the tie in the 78th minute as Langham beat the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper with an assist from senior defender Emily Malcom, giving the Blazers the lead and sealing the 2-1 victory.

For the Blazers, Jordan had five saves on six shots on goal and faced 11 shots throughout the match.

The Blazers improve to 6-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in ASC play, and will return to action as they host the Sul Ross State University Lady Lobos on Saturday, October 5. The match is set to kickoff in the Belhaven Bowl Stadium at Noon.
